In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Gen. Kainerugaba stated, “He is in my basement.” He followed up with another remark: “If you see Eddie’s head now he looks like an egg. Totally clean.”
The confirmation comes after NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya’s earlier statement on Wednesday, alleging that Mutwe had been “kidnapped by armed men” from Mbalwa in Mukono District. His whereabouts had remained unknown since the incident.
A series of posts from Gen. Kainerugaba on X further suggested Mutwe was in custody and had undergone changes during his detention.

Ugandan political discussions intensified Thursday following a series of social media posts by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, which have been widely interpreted as confirmation that Eddie Mutwe, a close associate of opposition leader Bobi Wine, is in custody.
Kainerugaba shared a series of statements implying that Mutwe had undergone changes to his appearance. “The beards were the first thing the boys removed. After he finished crying and urinating,” he wrote. He later added, “If you see Eddie’s head now he looks like an egg. Totally clean,” and continued, “Eddie is looking very smart these days. The boys have tuned him well. He salutes Mzee’s picture every day before breakfast.”
While Kainerugaba did not explicitly state where Mutwe is being held or under what legal framework, the remarks have raised concerns about his treatment and detention conditions.
In response, Bobi Wine commented briefly, stating, “Time will tell.”

As of Thursday evening, no official statements had been issued by the Uganda Police Force, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), or other government agencies regarding Mutwe’s status, and no charges against him have been announced.
Officials from the National Unity Platform (NUP) have called for clarity, urging that if Mutwe is in imprisonment, he should be produced in court. “This is a clear indication that our colleague is being held. We expect the state to follow the law,” a party official said.
Mutwe has been arrested on previous occasions and remains a central figure in Bobi Wine’s security detail, particularly since the rise of the People Power movement.
